ANNE SMERDON – Symbiosis

Hosted By 19 KAREN

Artist Statement

“Symbiosis” is a biological term that describes two species that live together in close association for a long period of time.

There are different types of symbiosis:

  1. Parasitism, where one species benefits from the relationship, the other is harmed
  2. Commensalism, where one species benefits, the other is relatively unharmed, and
  3. Mutualism, where both species benefit from the relationship.

Predominantly my works depict mutually beneficial relationships of a nurturing and harmonious co-existence between human, plant and animal. But every now and then a tale of the darker side of symbiosis reveals itself in a work.
