Artist statement:

The influence of Pablo Picasso on the world of modern art cannot be denied. In particular, the Spanish master’s revolutionary approach to Cubism has left an indelible mark on the development of experimental art in the early 20th Century, a point cleverly delivered by Johnny Romeo in the title Cubista Blue. Romeo’s vibrant, pastel-hued portrait of Picasso captures the intensity and commanding nature of the Spanish Cubist master, with the term ‘Cubista’ evoking images of Picasso as the powerful bull of Spanish art. The colour blue plays a prominent role in the painting, imbuing the work with an emotional gravitas that recalls the melancholic realism of the artist’s pre-Cubist ‘Blue’ period (1901-1904). Romeo rounds off the portrait on a subtly fashionable note with the inclusion of the quintessentially chic striped Breton shirt, a look popularised by creative visionaries ranging from Picasso to Coco Chanel and Kurt Cobain.
