Artist Statement – “For some, the crashing waves, screeching seagulls, children screaming as they play in the surf are the epitome of the beach experience. However, in the deaf world these friends inhabit they see the glare of the sun reflecting from the waves and feel it warming their skin, the sand coarsely rubbing against their feet and the smell of salt in the air.

These friends converse without words, they communicate through sign language, gestures, maybe a quick sideways glance and sometimes with even less than that. They have a profound understanding of each other and the ability to almost read each other’s minds.

The collective circles of connection float between them, their colours representing a mix of power, wisdom, new life, and knowledge. It is a beautiful and private moment, witnessing the interconnection of two friends in the sun.“
