Vincent Arnold (1986) grew up in Sherbrooke, Canada where he still lives and works. With qualifications in graphic design from University du Québec à Montréal, the artist demonstrates a penchant for figurative work where he harnesses characters eliciting unintentional self-portraits, reflecting perceptions influenced by social media.
Underpinning the artist’s work is the belief that the post-digital era transformed the process of social categorization, that the identity data collected through social media is often shifty, limited, and inaccurate. With the aim of triggering similar mechanisms and overturns for the viewer, subjects in Arnold’s work personify satires that serve this identity paradox. They are caricatures of complex individual human beings, avatars stemming from a social media cobweb that falsely yield their real identity. Although these themes critique social media platforms and individual interactions with them, these figures are meant to represent a subjective, humorous, and hence cynical viewpoint pertaining to privileged, cisgender, heterosexual white men. Arnold intentionally reveals his subjects as vulnerable and sensitive to the world around them, countering the “tide of toxic masculinity” pervasive in the media.
The artist states, “My work examines differences between real identity and the online avatar that represents the user, I communicate this through the depiction of everyday scenes that are familiar in today’s context, and a saturated colour palette to emulate the pixilation of a screen. Some elements are hyper realistic, while others remain strictly schematized and geometric, reminiscent of avatars. These are distinguished with apparent brushstrokes and cut marks teamed with an airbrush to depict the texture of a flat screen surface and program imagery such as Microsoft Paint and Photoshop.
In totality my work offers a perspective where certain elements from popular culture are painted with emphasis on aesthetics, pointing to the social importance of objects and commodities, and how our consumption greatly defines the image that we project.”
Arnold’s work has been shown at the Bellevue Art Museum, Washington, at 0.0.la, Los-Angeles and WIP Gallery, Montreal. He has also created murals for several clients including Cossette Communication, Sid Lee, SDC Les Quartiers du Canal and the city of Sherbrooke.
