Troy Brooks (Canada)

International Artist

Born in Ontario, Canada, Troy Brooks first learned to draw by sketching the work of the great classic Hollywood photographers George Hurrell, Edward Steichen, Cecil Beaton, Ruth Harriet Louise and Clarence Sinclair Bull. The dramatic lighting and enigmatic pansexuality of those images are sunbaked into the visual themes of Brooks’ work. His disproportioned vixens and viragos with their burning interior dialogue are widely recognized on the contemporary art scene and have been shown on three continents.

BIOGRAPHY

Toronto-based artist Troy Brooks paints glamorous women who don’t smile. In fact, the Women of Troy generally maintain cold, stoic faces despite the idea that the artist captures them in transformative moments. Brooks, who suffered greatly as a gay youth growing up in Canada, channels anger and escapism ever so subtly in characters inspired by Hollywood’s golden age, namely female leads who stood up to their male counterparts in less egalitarian times. The artist spoke with PRØHBTD about the many complexities in the stone-faced women he so brings to life on the canvas.
