Sophie Witter

Represented Artist

Amongst the domestic chaos of daily life and the curious eyes and fingers of her children, Sophie Witter creates abstract depictions of the things around her and outside her windows. She is interested in the tensions between our private and chaotic domestic spaces and the public outside world.

Self-taught, Sophie began painting as a means of self-preservation while raising her four children. Sophie uses acrylic paints and mixed media and is an experimental and intuitive artist, focusing on the challenges and pleasures that the creative process allows.

Sophie Witter is interested in depicting familiar household objects and placing them against the views from her window. Based in Hobart Tasmania, mountain and water views are as common place as the vases, jugs and lamps that she paints. “My paintings are based on the colours and shapes of the familiar objects that surround me in my home and the views outside my windows.   They have been created in my living room amongst domestic chaos and the curious eyes and fingers of my children.”
