Using a combination of blending, detailing, building, edging and scraping, I endeavour to give my works the richness and complexity synonymous with raw human emotion.
I prefer to use an abundance of negative space as an integral part of composition, using the subject’s likeness as simply a foundation upon which to produce a more intimate representation of their personality or situation to hand. This can sometimes be portrayed in what may seem to be a very ordinary and inconsequential setting, yet at the time of capturing the moment is extremely important in translating the emotion of interest.
With a previous background in people management, I have come to appreciate the complexity of communication through passive means such as posture or gesture, including what ‘isn’t said’ as much as that provided at face value. As such, I hope my work presents the strength and provocation for personal interpretation.
