ARTIST STATEMENT

17Sutra Suite

17Sutra speaks without words about the ‘painter mind’.
The Buddhist axiom – ‘The mind is a painter’ – is a universal characterisation of the mind. The axiom highlights that the human mind has an inner ‘eye’ and ‘voice’ that often reshapes and distorts the inputs of the primary senses of sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch. Consequently, the ‘inner eye’ is a kind of sixth sense that powerfully influences our understanding of the world around us.
Since undertaking mindfulness studies at the Chung Tian Buddhist temple, I have been exploring my ‘painter mind’ through my creative practice. The17Sutra suite is the product of these explorations.
The seventeen black canvases of the 17Sutra begin as denial and negation of sensory gratification – an expression of annihilation. The ‘inner eye’ wants love and life – what Freud classified as libido and ego. Attachment is a white craving for gratification and survival. White is formed by the red, green, blue spectrum – only black is its opposite – and seventeen is a number that can only be divided by one. 17Sutra is built on these things. Each painting in this suite is a reflection on libido and life as ‘giving attachment’.
