Petra Reece was born in Holland and immigrated to Australia with her family as a child. She first became interested in art at an early age, her father and brother also artists, leading the way.  She attended Philip Institute in Melbourne where she obtained both her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and post graduate diploma in Art and Design. She has worked as a professional artist for almost thirty years.

In the early stages of her career, Reece started painting, drawing and printmaking.  She draws her inspiration from artists such as Vermeer for his depiction of light, to Dutch landscapes for beautiful cloudy skies. More recently, Edward Hopper has been a vessel for inspiration for his depiction of ‘sunlight on the side of houses’.

Petra’s work continues to investigate the many possibilities of light and shade in both her still life paintings and those of her houses set in the landscape. She states, “I am not a single subject painter. Whatever moves me enough will eventually translate onto canvas. An old photo, a glimpse in the street, a shape, a colour, clouds, the sea, a vague memory…For my still life paintings I buy and arrange the various fabrics so that folds and the translucent material catch light to maximum effect. For my landscapes I usually rely on memory and imagination but always need to paint with light.”

Petra has had numerous exhibitions and awards with her work in Victorian collections.  Key achievements include a painting and drawing in the Castlemaine regional gallery permanent collection, and two large works in the Nillumbik Shire art collection.
