Mikael Takacs is a Stockholm-based marbler who employs pipettes to artfully distribute acrylic paint across his canvases. He coaxes his subjects into existence by manipulating the paint with tools like sticks and combs. Takacs masterfully blends the classic abstract expression of marbling with recognizable figures. Up close, the canvas reveals intricate, razor-sharp patterns, which coalesce into a portrait as you step back.

The patterns, while sharp, can create a blurry or fuzzy effect on the figure, paradoxically anonymizing the subject. This duality complicates our connection with the artwork. It’s challenging because the subject’s identity is obscured, yet this very ambiguity invites personal projection and interpretation. The artist juxtaposes the vivid and abstract with the vague and figurative.

Although variations of this technique have existed for centuries—originating as “Suminagashi” in 12th-century Japan and later evolving into the “Ebru” method in Europe via the Ottoman Empire—Takacs’s pieces are frequently mistaken for digital art.
