BIOGRAPHY

From an early age, painting and drawing were like breathing for Hance. Hance graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art and continued his graduate studies at Pratt Institute. A passionate observer, his artwork captures the most meticulous detail, and in doing so, affords in the stories it tells, a visual provocation. Hance creates work based on intuition and fate, leaving some of the work to chance and some to planning and execution.

Thematically, his work is focused on the mysteries of memory. Memories encapsulate our sense of personal and cultural identity and give contextual meaning to our lives, and yet our perception on any given thing changes invariably as each moment passes. The co-creation of remembrance with experience offers a continuous opportunity for fresh perspectives and infinite possibilities. Hance organizes his portrait paintings around this unpredictable medley. Technically, he plays with changes in composition and rhythm with the philosophical spirit of dynamism. While working in motifs of metamorphosis, auras, and gender identity.

The artist states, “The process of creating a piece for me is a meditative act, an ever-evolving game of adding and subtracting. I try to be as playful as possible and in the same breath uphold the idea of Chaos Theory. I’m always trying to push my boundaries and currently my creative approach is extremely organic — like a game of chess.”

Hance’s favoured materials to work with include pencils, pastels, golden acrylic paint and Van Gogh oils.  He starts with a gesture, and develops composition and peripheral detail from there, letting the painting dictate its final form. With intent focus on the eyes specifically, Hance is intrigued by the fundamental nature of his subjects, whether the figure he is creating is a person, a memory or a concept.
