International Artist

Matthew Hance is a graduate from the Maryland Institute College of Art and earned a Bachelors in Fine Art with a concentration in painting.

Hance’s current body of work is highly focused on the concept of memory. The ability to store and recall information is one of the most amazing capacities of higher organisms. One way Hance achieves this in his work is by organizing a painting around unpredictable changes in composition, rhythm, and weight.

ABOUT

Matthew JF Hance graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art and continued his graduate studies at Pratt Institute.

His current body of work is highly focused on the mysteries of memory; the ability to store and recall information is one of the most amazing capacities of higher organisms. Memories encapsulate our sense of personal and cultural identity and give meaning to our lives, and yet our perception on any given thing changes invariably as each moment passes.

The co-creation of remembrance with experience offers a continuous opportunity for fresh perspectives, which is welcome in the familiar field of portraiture; Hance organizes his portrait paintings around this unpredictable medley. Technically, he plays with changes in composition and rhythm with the philosophical spirit of dynamism.

While working in motifs of metamorphosis, auras, and gender identity, Hance also encourages viewers to dabble in anthroposcopy to determine the character of these figures from their physical features, or lack of them.

“I realized that the ‘thing’ and the ‘concept’ were substituted for feeling and understood the falsity of the world of will and idea.”  –Kazimir Malevich, 1915
