Alison Smiles

Alison Smiles

The childhood of Alison Smiles was full of light and colour, in a dusty little town on the outskirts of Adelaide, South Australia. Her mother was an art teacher and her father was a music teacher. Her young life was full of bedtime stories of gentle monsters and strange lands, and she was encouraged to paint on the walls and love animals.

Now, Alison makes sculptures that are sometimes functional, and functional ware that is often sculptural. Her aim is to spread some happiness through her work and make people smile when they are using the objects she creates.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I was lucky enough to have a fantastical wonderful childhood full of light and colour, in a dusty little town on the outskirts of Adelaide, South Australia. My mother was an art teacher and my father was a music teacher. I cannot underestimate the impact this has had on my chosen path – my life was full of bedtime stories of gentle monsters and strange lands, I was encouraged to paint on the walls and love animals.

I grew up, moved on and left my fantasy childhood behind, and began working in a series of jobs, even though I knew that one day I would be back there again. Then, at the age of thirty-five, I decided it was finally time to set sail for the colour and stories again.

I make sculpture that is sometimes functional, and functional ware that is often sculptural. My aim is to spread some happiness though my work & make people smile when they are using the objects I create.
