BIOGRAPHY
Born in Germany to a military family, David Thomas attended Briar Cliff University, Nebraska where he attained his BA in Studio Art and Art History. Currently living and working in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dave Thomas, paints haunting figures inside surrealistic landscapes using his unique style of fingerprinting. He has shown work nationwide and internationally, including murals, and publications.
Thomas’ signature ‘fingerprint’ technique developed from a desire to add an abstract element to his work. Enamoured by the result, what began as curiosity became an obsessed. Thomas quickly moved to painting vast field of fingerprints in an abstract grid formation which evolved to the figures and portraiture he is known for today.
By removing classic painting instruments, Thomas creates a more intimate, tactile relationship with his materials and subject matter. Playing with pressure and application, to produce shadows, tones and depth within his works, the final results are far removed from conventional childlike ‘fingerprint’ paintings one would expect.
The artist comments that the fingerprints themselves speak to identity and to all of the individual identities that have shaped us along our paths, putting their stamp on us, so to speak. We are not one identity, but an ever changing ever growing group of identities that we have encountered and learned from.
