Artist Statement:
What could happen when you give a tridimensional artist, (sculptor/industrial designer), just two dimensions to express his Art?
In working with tridimensional objects I found no limits in what could be created. And yet, while using a canvas or a flat area is very limited by its own size, the imagination itself remains totally unlimited.
Bringing elements from the fabrication and finishes of sculptures, I am using a special technique to bring a new effect to my paintings. The result is a space with depth, colour and texture, but with the absence of real texture: smooth to touch, flat, and with an almost surrealistic finish to the painting, we are confronted with an illusion.
I like to think that I am painting “personalities”. We are all made of colours, we like specific colours, we identify with them, and we feel attracted to them. We could build and describe our life in shades of colours that take us to places, objects, people, and lived experiences.
We are each made of many layers of colours and different tones. Using layers of colour and with some totally buried under those more dominant, I am fascinated by the process of revealing or “sculpting” the colour layers under those evident on the surface. It is like the process of getting to know a person. The more you dig into the painting the more you can see and reveal the real person and their “true colours”.
And you, what are your true colours? How readily do you let people see them?
