ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

With artistic integrity and intuition at the fore, deaf artist Angie Goto’s practice is inherently influenced by a congenital hearing difficulty. A staunch advocate for the deaf community, art provides Angie with a vehicle to explore colour and imagery from this unique perspective. With a distinctive figurative interpretation of her surroundings, her vibrant abstractions are delicate, proportionally honed and burgeoning in sensory detail.

Angie is experienced in ceramics, glassware, clothing and film with painting being her primary creative outlet. Her work is visually striking and mentally challenging. Angie studied Fine Art and Graphic Design in Newcastle and Sydney. She has had numerous successful exhibitions nationally and abroad and has been a finalist many art prizes such as Ravenswood Art Prize, Paddington Art Prize, Fisher’s Ghost Art Prize and Michael Reid’s National Emerging Art Prize. In addition to her art career, Angie works part-time as an Artist Educator at The Museum of Contemporary Art and Powerhouse Museum, where she focuses on special projects for the Deaf and hard of hearing audience. She also does freelance work at AGNSW, Hazelhurst Art Centre, and Campbelltown Art Centre.
